Block 2, 2018 – Approaches to Awe- Inspiring Scenes
- starts 29 May

This course will work on a number of monumental, or classic, acting scenes. A play or film script is considered to be a classic once it has been judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.

Adult performance scene

These scenes shed light on aspects of human nature that are common to all – regardless of location of time-frame. They form a major part of the training for actors at what are considered the world’s premier acting schools – whether in Russia, Northern Europe or English speaking drama schools, such as VCA, NIDA, WAAPA, RADA (in the UK), The Juilliard School (in New York) – to mention a few. When it comes to training a professional actor, there is a general consensus that classic scenes make for the highest form of training. Once an actor is trained to handle masterpieces, it becomes easy to apply the skills to all kinds of scripts.

For some people, the idea of working on masterful works may seem daunting, however it’s important to remember that this is an introductory course to these works.

Also, there is a great irony about these works. While they may demand more from actors in certain respects, in other ways they demand less than non-classical texts. Because the writing is of such a superlative nature, a student only needs to do exactly what is written on the page. This way, a natural rhythm and flow becomes apparent, making the scene easier to play with your partner (or partners). The skill is in learning how to truly follow the writer’s work, and this is what you will be taught during this course.

So, even if you are daunted by working on masterpieces, you can be assured of an awe-inspiring experience, as you undertake some of the best writing in the world. The characters are already three-dimensional, in situations that have been fully considered, and which reflect a timeless experience. Also, we will guide you through this experience and teach you the step by step skills of approaching this kind of acting (which applies to all forms of acting).

We will be teaching you a method to work on scripts by writers such as Heinrich Ibsen, August Strindberg, Anton Chekhov, Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill, Carol Churchill – to name but a few. Due to the timeless nature of these scripts, they do not need to be set in their original time and location, (as an example, a very old play may be set in today’s modern world). We will often play with the script’s setting in this way.

There is the potential to perform these scenes, in front of a live audience, during a season of shows in the Melbourne Fringe Festival, 2018 (in Block 3 that follows after Block 2).

If you wish to progress to a public performance level of these scenes, you may also enroll in the upcoming Melbourne International Fringe Festival Course. You may know from the beginning that this is what you wish to do (in which case, please inform us), or you may choose to wait and make up your mind later on down the track. If you do choose to go into The Fringe Festival, and your scene partner (s) does not, we will find you a new partner(s).

The decision to go on and take part in the Melbourne Fringe Festival Course, is entirely separate from this course.

You can do this course alone, regardless of whether you want to progress to a public performance level (in the following Block). However, there are obvious great advantages in taking scenes you have worked on for some time, to a pubic performance level. It’s entirely up to you, and it’s not a problem if it takes you some time to make this decision.

Although the terms “classic” and “masterpiece” may conjure up fears that this course will be more difficult than others, this is not the case. You will be thoroughly guided on how to approach and dissect these scenes and they will be directed in great detail.

The key point to remember is that is that the masterful nature of the scripts makes them accessible to everyone.

Block 3 – Intensive / Performance course leading to a series of shows in The Melbourne Fringe Festival – starts 24 july

This course offers a great opportunity to put the skills you learn into practice in front of a live audience in one of Melbourne’s major theatre festivals.

Melbourne Fringe Festival

  • Participants do not necessarily need prior experience, however commitment to the course is essential.
  • It is an ideal opportunity for aspiring actors – Many of our most successful students were first seen in one of our public performances. Although we cannot guarantee that they will attend, it is a great opportunity to invite agents and casting consultants along to see your work and we can provide you with a list of industry people to invite.
  • This course is also open to those who have no intention of becoming actors, and who simply want to gain a greater understanding of the actor’s process, and perform in front of a live audience.
  • Passion and commitment are the major pre-requisites for this course. While we can cope with the odd absence here and there, it is important that participants understand that others are relying on them to perform a piece of theatre in a major Melbourne theatre festival that is open to the public. We enter as a Recreational Adult Drama Class, so you do not need to feel as if you are capable of a professional standard of acting; nevertheless, we aim to create a show that is of a semi-professional standard.
  • You will be given pre-written scenes, and also work on group-devised pieces. These will all revolve around a given theme and you will have ample time to be taught and directed, so that you are ready for the shows!
